First things first: Sean "P. Diddy" Combs did not invent the remix, although he did produce some classic remixes in his day. However, none are included here, no "Only You" by 112, no "Can't You See" by Total. What does appear is a failed attempt to prove that he is still musically relevant.
On first listen, all the tracks on "We Invented the Remix" sound decent, and your head might start to bob ever so slightly. Then, as always with Puffy, something ruins the song. With Ashanti's "Unfoolish," the beat starts out amazing. Then it sounds familiar... too familiar. Not only is it the same sample from Notorious B.I.G.'s "One More Chance" (Remix), Biggie himself is brought back from the dead to supply the rap.
On Mary J. Blige's "No More Drama" remix, things sound great until Puff pipes in with his crap MC skills. When it comes to recycling beats, Puff was - and is - the master. But let's hope, for the sake of hip-hop, those days are over.
