It's not the music itself that is most important anymore, but this DJ's history, starting with his days at New York's Studio 54. And Justo, one of Moscow's longest-running trendy clubs, is celebrating its seventh birthday Saturday with the help of a person who has been at the forefront of club culture as we know it today.
Kenny Carpenter, who got his break doing lights and backup spinning at a New York club, was there when Studio 54 - possibly the best-known club of all time - had regulars like Andy Warhol and Mick Jagger. As late-'70s disco and soul were slowly exchanged for garage and house, Carpenter led the evolution while presiding over Studio 54's turntables, where he was appointed resident DJ in 1980.
He did move on, to mix at New York's Wild Pitch parties in the late '80s and at other clubs across the United States, Europe, Hong Kong and Japan. In the early '90s he joined WBLS radio, mixing on Mastermix Dance Party, and most recently he has been spinning for Ministry of Sound in London. So, while Carpenter is not coming to Moscow to give a history lesson - few dance in Justo anyway - his main function is to create the "look who's here" feeling, so sought after in this trendy club.
