Make the woman you love feel like a princess; give her something that sparkles, glitters and glows for Women’s Day. And what could be more eye-catching than a piece of costume jewelry?

Costume-jewelry designs are generally more extravagant, fashionable and colorful than anything you would find at a traditional jeweler’s – since they are not limited by the cost of precious stones or metals.

But that is not to say these accessories are cheap; given that materials are so varied, prices range from 70 rubles for a necklace at University Shopping Center’s Lady Collection, to 18,650 rubles for a Komplot necklace at Smolensky Passazh’s Eva. And you generally get the design and materials you pay for: The Komplot necklace is like a heavy scarf dripping in bunches of colorful glass and crystal beads.

The best selections of costume jewelry in Moscow can be found at Agatha and at Avantage at the new Atrium Shopping Center and at Infinity Art at Smolensky Passazh.

All the designs at French boutique Agatha are the store’s own, and the crystals are all Swarovski. One of Agatha’s most exclusive items is a handmade 1920s-style necklace containing false pearls, at 8,804 rubles. The customer service here is in a league of its own among costume-jewelry sales points in Moscow; for once, you feel like you are choosing something beautiful at a jeweler’s, as opposed to a baked potato at a kiosk.

In contrast, it’s a shame about the customer service at the Avantage stall at Atrium, because there is a wide range of colorful, quirky and original costume jewelry here. Butterfly, flower and cross motifs abound in the Komplot, Mon Plaisir, Evita Peron and Nikot brands.

One of our favorite costume jewelry designers is Alexa Lecomte, whose work is on sale at the Infinity Art and Eva stalls at Smolensky Passazh. The French designer says her inspiration is primarily personal and the result of her mood at a given moment. Although she works in no one pure style, she says she is particularly inspired by baroque jewelry, architecture and sculpture, which she says is heavy with details, like arabesques, roses and leaves. Lecomte explains that she likes her necklaces to be large and theatrical, like bunches of fruit. The designer recommends that her jewelry be worn with sober clothes that accentuate it.

Other costume-jewelry names on sale at Infinity Art include Poggi, Michel Negrin, Philippe Ferandis, Dolce Vita, Avantage and Remydis. One of the stall’s most exclusive rings is a large, flowery creation by Michelle Negrin. It costs 2,800 rubles, and each petal contains a green, dark-blue, pink, red or orange crystal. The designer was born 45 years ago in a kibbutz in Israel and left school at only 15. As a teenager she borrowed money from her brother to buy materials for her first trunk sale, and decades later she now has stores all around the world.

We also love Poggi’s costume jewelry, which can be bought at several outlets, though it is on sale at a 30 percent discount at Meridiano at the University Shopping Center.

Poggi’s costume-jewelry designs have a wide range of influences, from Byzantine and Berber art to art deco and geometric styles. But Gwenola Pottiers of Poggi in Paris notes that they also respond to pret-a-porter fashions, and, as a result, there is a lot of pink, white and sky blue in this season’s ranges.

The label puts out two collections a year, each with six ranges, including earrings, rings, broaches, necklaces and bracelets. All their crystals are Swarovski, and they also use glass beads and resin beads. Poggi’s jewelry is handmade and designed in-house.

Other French brands like Belle, Reminiscence and Dolce Vita, Holland’s Otzu and Israel’s Amaro are also on sale at Meridiano. The store says its most exclusive jewelry is by Reminiscence, since some items contain semi-precious stones.

Costume jewelry can also be found at stalls in malls all over the city, including Manezh and the GUM. But men beware: Some women love costume jewelry so much, they will do anything for it.
