Ever since South Africa got shot of its hated apartheid regime in 1990, the country has been searching for a cultural identity that merges the white Afrikaaner tradition with those of the Black peoples. The Marriott Hotel is now going to show Muscovites how well they have managed to get a national cuisine. From Nov. 5 to 12 the hotel, supported by the South African Embassy, is going to be the venue for a South African Food and Wine Festival. The main events will include a presentation for travel agencies, a Gala dinner for the press and diplomats, wine dinners and wine tasting and a cooking class. You can be sure that you are eating the real thing because the hotel has invited two chefs, Richard Jahnke and his assistant from the famous Sun City Palace Hotel, to come and do the honors. They will highlight original Afrikaaner dishes such as Wild Boar with Fig Garnish and Smoked Ostrich fillet. A music and dance troupe from Cape Town will be adding to the atmosphere of an authentic South African event with what some South Africans call ‘coon culture.'
